Hairs are peculiar modifications of the epidermis, and consists essentially of the same structure as that of membrane. Straight hairs are stronger than curly hairs. A hair consists of a root, the part implanted in the skin, the shaft or stem, the portion projecting from its surface, and the point.
Hair cells develop in pits in the skin called follicles, which reach down into the dermis. The cells divide and eventually die, forming a hair shaft as dead cells build up. Each follicle has phases of growth and rest. The skin consists of a layer of vascular tissue named the dermis, corium, or cutis vera, and an external covering of epithelium, termed the epidermis or cuticle. Embedded beneath the dermis are certain organs with special functions, namely, the sweat- glands, hair follicles, and sebaceous glands. Epidermis is non-vascular, and consists of stratified epithelium. In structure, the epidermis consists of several layers of epithelial cells, agglutinated together and having a laminated arrangement. These layers may be described as composed of four different strata from within outwards: 1) stratum malpighii/ stratum germinativum; 2) stratum granulosum; 3) stratum lucidum; and 4) stratum corneum. Again, between stratum granulosum and stratum lucidum there is a thin continuous keratin membrane.
Hair follicles lose their ability to function efficiently due to various inner dysfunctions and or deficiencies such as low blood-level of nutritional components, poor capillary circulation at the hair root, etc. Environmental factors and hygiene also affect hair quality. Most hair care products do not provide any nutrition at all to the hair.
Shampoo is a detergent that cleanses hair. It’s synthetic chemicals strip hair of its protective natural oils (lipids) which are essential for moisture retention and to keep hair supple. Absence of a protective layer and the caustic function of shampoo weaken linkages of hair keratin resulting in hair damage (cracking/ split-ends).
Excessive shampooing results in a dry scalp and brittle hair, exposing both hair and the scalp to infections and other skin related problems.
Conditioners are used for pliability and masking dry hair. Synthetic conditioners present a glossy cosmetic effect, and do not contain any nutrients for hair and scalp. Alcohol contained in most hair care products dissolves the protective natural lipids from the outer coating of hair, and depletes its protein. It makes hair brittle, gray faster, and also dries the scalp.
An unhealthy scalp cannot promote healthy hair. The hair and scalp need proteins and vitamins for growth and protection. An unique botanical product providing appropriate nutrition is a sensible choice for naturally healthy hair and scalp.
